Dan Graham: Beyond at MOCA

The MOCA conversation with Dan Graham last Sunday was a rare experience--an intimate and lively two hours with the artist and his friends/collaborators Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth as they discussed and answered questions on a variety of subjects such as mutual inspirations, contemporary art and its evolution, feminism, higher education in the arts, rock and roll, their admiration of the Los Angeles art community, and many subjects....beyond. Over 3,000 people!!!! came out on Saturday for the opening and were treated to a performance by Kim Gordon & Thurston Moore.

Chinatown @ the Mountain Bar. Memories of funny times past. New memories of these funny times. I had a major migraine, so Stephen Prina's performance irony was lost on me at first...but then it kicked in to my slow brain as my pain wore off. He was a dear. And so was that Ezra with the insane massage--that certainly helped the migraine away.

Dave is the best gentleman ever. He disappeared outside and comes back with magical sandalwood fans for Linlee & me. Index artists Kevin Hanley and T. Kelly Mason DJ'd. The highlight for me was Grace Jones. So primal.

So, here is what I've been up to work-wise. We had a superb turnout for and response to the launch of MOCA's Happy House. Its exciting to be involved in the birth of something new, creative, and out of the box as the saying goes.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) launched a brand new support council, MOCA Happy House, on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at an exclusive preview and champagne reception celebrating the opening of Los Angeles-based artist Sterling Ruby's first solo museum exhibition, MOCA Focus: Sterling Ruby, SUPERMAX 2008. A black-light after-party was hosted by MOCA Happy House and its founders Karyn Kohl and Ezra Woods at the Mandrake Bar.

In an effort to inspire a new generation of cultural philanthropists, Happy House Chair Karyn Kohl—a dedicated MOCA patron and supporter of Sterling Ruby's installation at MOCA Pacific Design Center—and Ezra Woods will be collaborating with the museum to create unique events and outreach for an influential, young demographic interested in cultural engagement. The mission of MOCA Happy House is centered on cultivating lifelong philanthropic habits and generating support for MOCA programming.
