Palm Springs....no Coachella, thank you.

My toes are where Frank's toes once were....

A few days in the desert. Enjoyed some time at the Frank Sinatra estate for a lovely party hosted by the guardian angel/designer Jeremy Scott for adidas. Cocktails were refreshing & delicious....Belvedere IX (with antioxidant acai fruit!) and IZZE natural sparkling juice (our major fav!!!). This gorgeous bartender mixed it with IZZE grapefruit for a serious treat that kept the tight list of guests (Justice, Peaches Geldof, pop-culture phenomenon Jonny Makeup, Kanye, Robyn, Keala Kennelly, Zoe Kravitz, Aziz Ansari AND most importantly MY friends LOL) hydrated, smiling and dancing til 4AM!

Sing it ala Grace Jones. Warm.....leatherette. White leather a moment avec Jeremy
.

Fantastic friend and incredibly talented makeup artist Roxy pampered some VIPs @ Frank's former estate pre-party with her amazing Intracueticals oxygen facial machine using the same products and technology that Madonna is famous for enjoying. Incredible to see the difference, especially somewhere so dry and hot. Fine lines...banished away. Completely understand why M is addicted. Faces look fuller, more lifted and glowing. It is the machine...and Roxy's magic touch and calming energy as well.

In Search of Snow....1 hour away from Hollywood

Bored on a Sunday? Nothing better than a Sunday drive with someone along for adventure (especially when the Mini gets such fantastic gas mileage AND is fun to drive along those curvy roads). We set out with no particular agenda other than the quest for snow.... Would it be a fruitless search in the middle of April in Los Angeles County?
It was REALLY warm at the bottom of the mountain, somewhere in the 80s and very arid.

We looked @ the map and decided to head to Mt. Baldy as neither of us had been there. We stopped @ Walmart somewhere in the valley....it was for me, like visiting another country. Really fascinating.... Some cool jelly gladiator sandals in the kids dept. looked pretty stylish on my little feet and how cool is this little pom pom animal kit?!

We took a fairly empty tram up the mountain. The temperature was about 40ish at the top.

My snow art....

Full wardrobe change. The Russian hat for the Jeskimo look was actually brought along for style...I'll admit, but was completely neccessary to keep warm! My partner in crime is camera shy so he shall remain anonymous here, but thanks to him for the very 60s pic.
Snow melts midway down the mountain. Absolutely beautiful and peaceful....the sound of that rushing water....I hopped across some rocks to sit mid-stream and meditate a bit.

Muscle Car

How insane is this new Dodge Charger? I can't help it ya'll. I may be a classy lady but you can't get the Southern roots out of what makes my pupils dilate sometimes ;) Loving the car companies doing these new versions while keeping the essence of the old school hotness there.

I snapped photos of the car, not noticing at all the driver, parked in front of the Riviera hotel in Palm Springs. Well, it wasn't a hot guy in the seat. It was none other than Audrina from The Hills. Sometimes one just cannot escape the inescapable. C'est la vie & LOL. I have to say she was quite a nice girl and we chatted about the"interesting" world of creative editing on that show. She didn't seem half as ditzy as I hear she is portrayed. Why not exploit the system back?! She's working it. She enjoys the spotlight, so good on her for making the most while she can. Time & $$ help to heal wounds ;)

La Jolla.....road trip

Shades of a beautiful grey day in La Jolla. View from inside the Museum of Contemporary Art, down 145 steps inside the cave at La Jolla cove with a cormoran taking flight from the sea, cave people, and legendary Windansea & the shack....

Thank you...

To the lovely folks who have emailed lately from around the globe as that spectacle makes its way around. Nice to "meet" those that see through the fluff. Your kind sentiments are appreciated :)

Time Warp + Transcendent +Talent

2 hours went by like 2 minutes....Akron Family. A live experience....the guitarist was like a white Jimi Hendrix.....

Most of Last Week....

Especially Thursday night, the moon was massive. Sucking you into him in sort of a trance. His head was tipped coyly to the side and his face was this vivid yellow-orange.

Champagne. Art for sale. The full moon. A transcendent rock experience. Wild coyotes. Winding roads. Twinkling lights of the city. The quietness of a canyon at night. Ghost stories. History. Rioja. Veils. Kindred spirits of adventure. Gelato topped with Disaronno. Films. Books. Work. Carpe Diem. No BS. Hurray for Hollywood ;) Peace in the canyon ya'll.

What do you think? Am I reaching? It just seems very much in the vein of Jeremy Scott....

Ralph Ginzburg

In one of those lives I have lived, I was supposed to be a graphic designer or art director of some sort. I still have a very particular adoration for design and typography. I feel the choice of a font is one of the most important elements in visual communication. A particular font really "speaks," sends a feeling, emotion, state of mind...... And it is also important to take delicate care of a font, each letter, ala the craft of kerning in typography which seems a bit of a lost art these days.

Ginzburg's partner in crime was Herbert F. Lubalin who created one of my very favorite typefaces, Avant Garde, the same name given to one of their amazing, short-lived publications in the late 60s.

"It is characterized by geometrically perfect round strokes; short, straight lines; and an extremely large number of ligatures and negative kerning."

I love a rebel, and that was indeed Ginzburg. A very brilliant rebel who cared about the details... His writings and bold statements (many of which brought him serious trouble with the law) were perfectly visually communicated. If I could wriggle my nose ala Bewitched to magically dive into his magazines to live , I would be incredibly happy.

LECTURE CANCELLED! MARY KELLY @ The Hammer Museum on Thursday

It was cancelled. Not sure why.... :(We live and participate in this age of over-achievers striving for the "ultimate" in career and personal trajectories. There are the pedigrees of education, one's "title" in the workplace, an idealistic love life, family, and capitalist status symbols. We make ourselves crazy. That is my rant for the moment. Segueing to:

Without a doubt Mary Kelly is one of the most important (female) artists of our time. Her Post-Partum Document was a bit of a scandal in the 1970s. A book of the work was later published in the 1980s which has images of her artwork along with often daily writings from a set period of time after giving birth. Her insights are as valuable today as they were 30 years ago. Her writing of the balance in being a nurturing woman in the traditional sense juxtaposed with the mixed bag of guilt vs. fulfillment she receives from her art and work are what most of us can truly understand, both male and female. Of course there is even more than PPD to consider.

As artist Dan Graham said in his MoCA conversation last week, "Every artist should also be a writer," Mary Kelly is indeed that and more. Her work is art, analysis, and essential.

You have the opportunity to hear her speak (for free) in Los Angeles at the Hammer Museum this THURSDAY.

Free Food For Your Brain This Week in LA

Feed your mind and get out there to show support of some great ladies (and men). While I cannot fathom going back to school, I do miss the regular experience of learning and feeding of the mind. Why not get up off your sofa or leave work in time in order to take advantage of the amazing and free benefits of living in the big city.

Sally Singer

Conscientious Consumption: Sustainability and the Future of Luxury

Los Angeles has always been the fashion world's barometer of lifestyle shifts. Sally Singer, the fashion news and features director of Vogue, asks four leading Los Angeles designers about their strategies, aesthetics, and philosophies in response to extraordinary environmental and economic changes. What is the modern relationship between the ethical and the luxurious (for designer and consumer)? Singer will be joined by renowned jewelry designer Tom Binns; the "Godfather of Denim" and Goldsign designer, Adriano Goldschmied; Dosa founder and designer, Christina Kim; and Kate Mulleavy, one of the design duo behind Rodarte. The discussion will be followed by a Q & A session.

Dan Graham: Beyond at MOCA

The MOCA conversation with Dan Graham last Sunday was a rare experience--an intimate and lively two hours with the artist and his friends/collaborators Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth as they discussed and answered questions on a variety of subjects such as mutual inspirations, contemporary art and its evolution, feminism, higher education in the arts, rock and roll, their admiration of the Los Angeles art community, and many subjects....beyond. Over 3,000 people!!!! came out on Saturday for the opening and were treated to a performance by Kim Gordon & Thurston Moore.

Go see the exhibition with a friend and support MOCA...
